On her way home four sheriffs stop her on the hill to tell her about the break-in—someone’s grandson looking for prescription meds. The occupants were home at the time and junior scared the bejesus out of them. He’d tied them up. He may be armed.

She goes straight home. The screen door is hooked and the deadbolt has been checked twice. She notices the wind has picked up. The tall spruce trees along the side of the property are in sway mode. Tiny whitecaps brighten the water just off the floating dock out back. Her Beretta is loaded and within reach. There’s one hollow point in the chamber and fourteen more reasons not to enter this particular camp on the lake.
