Colour of Wonder

Once in the middle of spring there was a garden surrounded by a high brick wall with a little arched wrought iron gateway. This was hidden behind a twist of weeds but poets and children managed to find their way in. A tree from a faraway land grew in the garden. There came a time when the poets and children liked to sit on the grass under its shady branches where the children sipped lemonade and nibbled fairy cakes while the poets wrote poems.

After the poets' picnics the children went down to the water that flowed at the bottom of the garden to dip in their fishing nets and catch willow leaves that glimmered and gleamed like fish. Autumn had come and high in the branches of the tree from a faraway land grew small pods like lanterns. Sometimes at night there was moonlight which lit up the lanterns.

The branches of the trees were bare now. Often in the morning the tree from a faraway land was white with frost. Through gaps left by the leaves light of the low sun could be seen spangling the watwr that flowed under a little bridge. So much more room to dazzle. The children blinked. The poets blinked.
